Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1

Do I need firm sponsorship to take a FINRA exam?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the exam. The SIE is open to anyone 18 or older without sponsorship. Most other FINRA exams — including the Series 7, Series 24, Series 63, and Series 66 — require you to be associated with a FINRA member firm, which will file a Form U4 on your behalf and enroll you in the exam.

Question 2

How do I register for a FINRA exam?

Accepted Answer

For sponsored exams, your firm's compliance department registers you through FINRA's Central Registration Depository (CRD) after filing your Form U4. Once enrolled, you'll receive a confirmation with a testing window — typically 120 days — during which you must schedule your exam through Prometric, FINRA's testing partner. For the SIE, you can register directly through FINRA's website without firm involvement.

Question 3

Where are FINRA exams administered?

Accepted Answer

FINRA exams are administered at Prometric testing centers located throughout the United States. Some exams are also available via online proctoring, which allows you to test from home or a private office under remote supervision. Check the Prometric website for available locations and online testing eligibility for your specific exam.

Question 4

What happens if I fail a FINRA exam?

Accepted Answer

If you fail a FINRA exam, you must wait 30 days before you can retake it. After a third failed attempt, the waiting period extends to 180 days. There is no limit to the total number of attempts. If you've failed once, we strongly recommend working with a tutor before your next attempt — most repeat failures stem from the same unaddressed knowledge gaps.

Question 5

What ID do I need to bring to the testing center?

Accepted Answer

You'll need two forms of valid ID. The primary ID must be government-issued with both a photo and a signature (such as a driver's license or passport). The name on your ID must match exactly what appears on your exam registration. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled start time — late arrivals may be turned away and forfeit their exam fee.

Question 6

How long should I study for the Series 7?

Accepted Answer

Most candidates need 6–10 weeks of consistent study to be well-prepared for the Series 7. If you're working full-time, plan for at least 2–3 hours of focused study per day. The key is consistency and quality — reviewing your wrong answers in detail is more valuable than simply logging more hours with the same material.

Question 7

What study materials do you recommend?

Accepted Answer

We recommend using a reputable prep provider such as Kaplan, STC, or Pass Perfect for your primary study materials. Supplement with FINRA's official content outlines, which are free to download and map exactly what the exam covers. Practice questions are essential — aim for at least 1,500 before exam day. We can help you identify which resources align best with your learning style during your consultation.

Question 8

What topics are most important to focus on for the Series 7?

Accepted Answer

Equity securities, debt securities, and options together account for roughly 55% of the Series 7. Suitability and customer account topics are also heavily tested and frequently misunderstood. Don't neglect the regulatory sections — many candidates lose points there because they deprioritized it during study. A tutor can help you allocate your time based on your specific weak areas rather than studying everything equally.

Question 9

How do I know if I'm ready to schedule my exam?

Accepted Answer

A good benchmark is consistently scoring 75% or higher on full-length timed practice exams under realistic conditions. If you're hitting that mark reliably, you're likely ready. If you're scoring in the 65–72% range, you're close but need more targeted work on your weak areas. Scheduling before you're consistently above 75% significantly increases your risk of failing — and the 30-day waiting period that follows.
